The highest achievement in the CFA show ring is accomplished when a cat successfully earns the title of National Winner (NW). CFA established the title of Grand Champion in 1930 and the title of National Winner first appeared in 1971. In CFA, each year the top 25 cats in Championship, 25 Kittens and 25 cats in Premiership are awarded the NW title.
The Oriental was first recognized by CFA in 1977 - at that time, however, only in the short-haired variety. In 1995, the long-haired variety was also recognized.
In the very first year that they were recognized by CFA, the breed also had its first National Winner. A lavendar spotted female named GC, NW Sand N' Sea Bikkuri of Jemwyck was 18th Best Cat. To date, there has not yet been a long-haired National Winner...
To date, no Oriental has earned a Best in any of the categories - the closest was in the 1999-2000 show season, when GC, BW, NW Myrlyn Plain White Wrapper of Jmagz finished the season as 2nd Best Cat. The 2002-03 show season saw the greatest success for the breed so far, with 5 Orientals earning National Wins - 3 adults, 1 kitten, and 1 alter.
