The Cat Angel Network

Sadly, every day of every year, cats and kittens are abandoned at animal shelters and humane societies across our country.

Some kitties are found lost on the street. Some cats are brought in by people who can no longer care for their pet, and some poor felines are confiscated because they have been ill-treated.

In the United States alone, over 8 million cats and dogs enter shelters each year. Some find new homes quickly but many are deemed "unadoptable" because of medical or behavioral problems. Often these problem animals must be euthanized when no home can be found for them.

But these "hopeless" cases are sometimes rescued by a "Guardian Angel" - an individual who volunteers to foster the hard-luck kitty until the perfect new family can be found for it.

Being a foster parent means taking the cat into your home, taking it to a vet for medical attention, neutering or spaying if necessary, grooming it, and working to correct behavioral problems like not using kitty litter or shyness... and of course giving the kitty love... lots and lots of love. And all during the time of the fostering, there is a search for a permanent home - a special home for a special kitty. Besides the time, emotion, and effort invested by the volunteers involved in cat rescue, they often also personally assume all financial responsibility for the foster cats in their care.

Rescued cats must be examined by a veterinarian and tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Infection, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, bathed and groomed.

As much as most cat breeders would like to be involved in cat rescue, it is often too difficult for them to foster rescued cats without risking the health of kittens in their own cattery. Two totally separate cat facilities would be needed to avoid exposing cattery cats to possible infections from the outside cats.

So unfortunately, many people deeply involved in their cats cannot help a kitty in need directly... but there is another way you can help.
