In 2017, the Westminster Kennel Club dog show takes place in New York City on February 13 and 14, and is expected to feature nearly 3,000 dogs.

First held in 1877, this year Westminster will break from 141 years of tradition and feature cats as an integral part of their program.

Cats have previously been part of an event held separately on Westminster weekend, but this year the felines will share the spotlight with their canine counterparts in a feature titled "Meet & Compete".

About 40 cat breeds will participate, each with their own breed booth featuring information, photos and ambassador cats eager to interact with the public. Of course, the cat's owners will be ready to answer any questions spectators may have. Also included will be a cat agility demonstration where the cats complete an obstacle course.

The American Kennel Club describes the event as an "opportunity to meet and play with hundreds of adorable dogs and fabulous felines while learning about responsible pet ownership."

Westminster is the most prestigious all-breed dog show in America — and along with England's Crufts is the most renowned canine competition in the world. With the inclusion of cats in this famous canine event, it is a wonderful opportunity for pedigreed cats to receive wide exposure to a pet-loving audience.
