Have you had a stud cat that was reluctant to breed? Just not interested in the ladies? Does he just ignore a female in heat?

Well, perhaps you may be able to jump-start his interest by spraying his next sweetheart with a spritz of perfume. But it can't be just any perfume. It must be Calvin Klein Obsession for Men.

Yes. The men's cologne that is advertised as a fiery, compelling and provocative scent for the passionate man... also seems to fascinate cats of all sizes.

Zoos around the world have long used various perfumes and colognes to keep confined animals curious about their surroundings. A spray of a scent on rocks, trees and toys in their living area gives them a new odor to explore.

In 2003, the general curator for the Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo in New York, tested 24 fragrances by spraying objects and recording how long two cheetahs spent interested in each individual perfume.

The results were interesting:

  • Estee Lauder's Beautiful occupied the cheetahs on average for just two seconds.
  • Revlon's Charlie - 15.5 seconds.
  • Nina Ricci's L'Air du Temps - up to 10.4 minutes.
  • Obsession for Men triumphed: 11.1 minutes - longer than the cats usually take to eat a meal!

Obsession for Men launched in 1986. Today, it remains among the Top 10 best-selling men's fragrances world-wide. The cologne, posted sales of about $85.5 million in 2010.

Ann Gottlieb, the "nose" who helped create Obsession for Men, explains that the cologne has synthetic "animal" notes like civet, a musky substance secreted by the cat of the same name, giving it particular sex appeal. She adds, "It sparks curiosity with humans and, apparently, animals."
