Canines proudly wear the motto of being Man's Best Friend, but are also cast as a cat's classic enemy as illustrated in the expression, "fighting like cats and dogs". But sometimes it is very clear that a dog chooses not to see cats as something to chase, but instead the canine heart opens to embrace a feline — or in this case, two tiny felines . . .

Such was the case for Zelda, a 5 year old female Chinese Crested owned by Heather Ashcroft-Hill, pet adoption counselor and veterinary technician at the Burlington Humane Society in Ontario, Canada.

The Society rescued a pair of helpless 5 day old kittens. The kittens were placed into foster care because they required round the clock care with feedings at two hour intervals.

Care-giver Heather introduced the tiny babies to her dog, Zelda by holding each kitten in the palm of her hand and then allowing Zelda to sniff it.

Zelda licked the first kitten then went to the tiny carrier containing the second kitten and tried to get in with it. This was an amusing situation as the carrier was just big enough for the two kittens. Zelda definitely didn't fit.

After assessing the situation, Heather prepared roomier accommodations and Zelda settled down with "her" two kittens and cuddled and cleaned them head to foot.

While Zelda couldn't nurse the babies, she kept then clean, warm and content, helping them to grow up to be well-rounded kittens.

Zelda's 24/7 care of the kittens also allowed Heather to get a bit of rest between those frequent bottle feedings . . .

Cat Mothers Adopting Orphan Puppies

Zelda is not the only animal that has reached across the species barrier to lend a helping hand . . . Hmmm . . . helping paw. . .

Cat mothers too have also often welcomed orphan puppies into the family . . .

A cat in a Manitoba shelter nursed three abandoned puppies along with her own kittens . . .

Mom-cat named Smaigel nursed her kittens and four puppies
when the puppies' mother was killed in a car accident . . .

This kitty cared for a litter of four Basset Hound puppies when their mother died . . .

Along with her only family of three kittens, Zoey nursed a pug puppy rejected by his mother . . .
