The Foldex is a breed of cat developed in the province of Québec in Canada beginning in the early 1990s. It was originally produced by crossing a Scottish Fold with an Exotic Shorthair. The Foldex blends the physical features of the two parent breeds in moderation, creating a cat which has a sweet open expression with a gentle fold to its ears — the goal being to produce a cat that has the look of a small teddy bear.

History of The Foldex Breed
The Foldex made its first appearance in a Québec show hall in 1995 when Betty-Ann Yaxley exhibited a kitten in the Canadian Cat Association (CCA).
People were captivated by the adorable look of the new breed and several breeders decided to work to develop and promote the breed. One of these new breeders was Jeanne Barrette. It was Jeanne's relentless work and perseverance that led to the Foldex being accepted as an Experimental Breed in CCA in November 1998. Being a minority breed, progress was slow but the Foldex was finally accepted as a New Breed in August 2006 and then acquired full Championship breed status in March 2010.

Because the Foldex breed is only recognized by the Canadian Cat Association (CCA), it is currently being bred mainly in Canada, although there are Foldex in the US and Europe. Muriel BÉGIN of Katrina-Cat Cattery is the current Foldex Breed Secretary in CCA.

General Appearance
The Foldex has a shorter nose than a Scottish Fold but not as short as an Exotic Shorthair. The eyes are well rounded and wide open. The head is round when viewed from every angle. The ears are small with rounded tips. Ears have a single fold which causes them to point forward in a downward direction. The body of the Foldex is massive with good bone structure and a short neck.
Nothing is extreme in the Foldex. All features are moderate. Both shorthair and longhair coats are permitted. For more details about the Foldex appearance, please read The Foldex Breed Standard.
Temperament
The Foldex is an active, cheerful, intelligent and curious cat. Affectionate, it approaches strangers with ease and enjoys being petted. Foldex generally have a very charming personality.

Foldex Genetics
The most distinctive feature of the Foldex is obviously its folded ears.
As in their parent breed, the Foldex ears are due to a single dominant or incomplete dominant gene. Breeders of Foldex never mate a folded ear cat with another folded ear cat for fear of doubling up on the folded ear gene — something that can result in bone deformities.
Because breeders only pair a folded ear cat with a straight ear cat, it means that statistically only 50% of the resulting kittens will receive the gene for the folded ear.
The Foldex Ear
All Foldex kittens are born with straight, unfolded ears. The ears of a kittens with the Fold gene will begin to show the fold within 21 - 28 days from birth.
The folding of the ear continues to slowly develop over the next few months until by the time the kitten is 11-12 weeks of age, the quality of the folded ear can be determined. A Foldex cat has a single fold in its ears, unlike the Scottish Fold which has a double or triple crease that causes the ear to lie totally flat against the head.
The kittens that do not develop folded ears are called "Straights".

Foldex are produced through the matings of four different breed combinations:
- Foldex x Foldex (Straight)
- Foldex x Exotic Shorthair
- Foldex x Scottish Fold (One parent would be straight-eared)
- Scottish Fold x Exotic Shorthair
