The highest achievement in the CFA show ring is accomplished when a cat successfully earns the title of National Winner (NW). CFA established the title of Grand Champion in 1930 and the title of National Winner first appeared in 1971. In CFA, each year the top 25 cats in Championship, 25 Kittens and 25 cats in Premiership are awarded the NW title.
The American Shorthair is one of America's early breeds, and CFA chose to recognize the breed as one of its first five registered breeds, back in 1906.
In the very first year that the National Awards were started, a male American Shorthair named GC, NW Kayvana's Mauris of Bushome was 16th Best Cat.
To date, two American Shorthairs (GC, GP, NW Step-An-Fetch-It and GC, GP, NW Briarson Babette of Midinite) have been Best Cat in Premiership, and 2 American Shorthairs (GC, NW Hedgewood's Greatest American Hero and GC, NW Sol-Mer Sharif) have been Best Cat. The 1996-97 show season saw the greatest success for the breed, with 2 kittens, 4 adults, and 1 alter earning National Wins.
