The highest achievement in the CFA show ring is accomplished when a cat successfully earns the title of National Winner (NW). CFA established the title of Grand Champion in 1930 and the title of National Winner first appeared in 1971. In CFA, each year the top 25 cats in Championship, 25 Kittens and 25 cats in Premiership are awarded the NW title.
The idea of a "mini" Black Panther was the inspiration for this breed. In 1953, Nikki Horner began to pursue this dream, originally crossing a black American Shorthair with a Sable Burmese. With a lot of work, careful breeding, and thoughtful selection, she was able to consistently reproduce the type and color she was looking for.
18 years later, in 1976, the Bombay was accepted for Championship status by CFA. However, it wasn't until the 1982-83 show season before the Bombays had their first National Winner - a female named GC, NW Road To Fame's Mabel Black Label, DM.
To date, only one Bombay has earned a "Best" in any of the categories - for the 2003-04 show season, GC, BW, NW Caricature's Colin Powell was the Best Cat.
Below is a table with the national winning Bombays including their name, sex, year of their win, and the award they earned.
