The highest achievement in the CFA show ring is accomplished when a cat successfully earns the title of National Winner (NW). CFA established the title of Grand Champion in 1930 and the title of National Winner first appeared in 1971. In CFA, each year the top 25 cats in Championship, 25 Kittens and 25 cats in Premiership are awarded the NW title.
The Burmese is one of America's early breeds, and CFA originally accepted them for registration in 1936. However, in 1947, registration was suspended, as breeders were producing too many hybrids. They put in place a rule that there had to be 3 generations of pure Burmese to be registered as a Burmese. It took 10 years, until 1957, before registration of the Burmese was resumed by CFA.
Dilute Burmese were originally accepted by CFA in 1979, under the breed name "Malayan". However, in 1984, the Malayans were incorporated into the Burmese breed, as a separate division - "dilute".
Burmese have been very successful in the show rings, and have had at least 1 National Winner every show season. In the very first year that the National Awards were started, a male Burmese named GC, NW Motet's Troubador of Senshu was 6th Best Cat.
To date, one Burmese (GC, NW Windflower's Chelsea Rose of Qitta) has earned the award of Best Kitten, one Burmese (GC, NW Kemlen Keowee) has earned the award of Best Cat, and 2 Burmese (GP, NW Crestvue's Heather of Colchester and GC, GP, NW Chinquapin Baubles Bangles & Beads) have earned the award of Best Alter.
The first dilute Burmese to win a National award occured in the 1985-86 show season, when GC, GP, NW Sixes Gentlemen-Prefer-Blondes was 7th Best Alter.
