The highest achievement in the CFA show ring is accomplished when a cat successfully earns the title of National Winner (NW). CFA established the title of Grand Champion in 1930 and the title of National Winner first appeared in 1971. In CFA, each year the top 25 cats in Championship, 25 Kittens and 25 cats in Premiership are awarded the NW title.
The Egyptian Mau is the oldest spotted domestic cat. The first Egyptian Maus arrived in the United States in 1956, brought by Russian princess Nathalie Troubetskoy, who had been living in exile in Italy. While living in Rome, she was given a speckled kitten - upon investigation, she discovered the kitten was an Egyptian Mau, and worked to save the breed from extinction. The breed was accepted by CFA for championship status in 1977.
It wasn't until the 1992-93 show season that the Egyptian Mau had their first National Winner - and they started with a bang, with their first National Winner being both a kitten and championship winner! A silver female named GC, NW Maipet's Shanadu of Kayzie who was 6th Best Kitten and 19th Best Cat.
To date, no Egyptian Mau has earned a "Best" in any of the categories. The breed's highest placement was also their first national placement, in the 1992-93 show season, when GC, NW Maipet's Shanadu of Kayzie was 6th Best Kitten.
