The highest achievement in the CFA show ring is accomplished when a cat successfully earns the title of National Winner (NW). CFA established the title of Grand Champion in 1930 and the title of National Winner first appeared in 1971. In CFA, each year the top 25 cats in Championship, 25 Kittens and 25 cats in Premiership are awarded the NW title.
The Japanese Bobtail was first accepted by CFA in 1976 - although only the short-haired version was accepted at that time. It would be almost 20 years - 1993 - before the long-haired version was accepted.
Interestingly enough, the Japanese Botail is one of the few breeds that are still able to import a cat "off the street" in Japan, and have it be registered with CFA as a "foundation" cat. These cats are even eligible to be shown, and recently in region 2, a lovely girl was brought back from Japan and earned her GC.
It was 1982 before the Japanese Bobtails had their first National Winner - a SH mi-ke female named CH, GP NW Kitai Mitu of Nekolady. The first long-haired Japanese Bobtail NW was in 1996 - a LH red & white male named GC, GP, NW Maricho's Hoseki.
