Canada's Prime Minister Holds
"Name The Cat" Contest

The Prime Minister of Canada, Steven Harper, is known as a cat lover.

He and wife Laureen have participated in the Ottawa Humane Society's Foster Program, which provides temporary homes for pets in the community who are not yet ready for adoption.

Recently, Harper and his family announced the adoption of a grey tabby kitten on their Facebook fan page and offered the public the chance to name him.

A statement on the site said "Happy to have a new Harper at 24". (24 Sussex Drive is the official residence of the Prime Minister of Canada).

Pictures were posted on Facebook, including one of the kitty mischievously holding a string in its front paws. They also offered the opportunity for the public to vote on a name for the new kitten.

Six possible names were proposed by the family:

  • Stanley, in honor of the Vancouver Canuck hockey team's' making it to the Stanley Cup finals.
  • Smokie
  • Gandalf
  • Griffin
  • Earl Grey
  • Vingt-Quatre (24 in French).
