CFA presently recognizes 35 pedigreed breeds for showing in the Championship Class, 1 breed in the Provisional Class, and 4 breeds in the Miscellaneous Class.
In the March 2002 Almanac, statistics were published for the years 2001 that included:
-
the number of registered litters for each breed
-
the number of live kitten births recorded on those litter registrations for each breed
-
the number of active breeders
Included with the statistics for 2001 were the corresponding statistics for 1991. This makes it possible for us to compare what has happened in the past 10 years to the popularity of each breed and for CFA cats in general.
The news for CFA is not good. Participation in the cat fancy has decreased 50% in the past 10 years and is continuing to decline.
The Bottom-Line for All Breeds: From 1991 to 2001:
-
CFA litter registrations dropped by 51% (from 56,817 to 27,805)
-
CFA reported live births dropped by 51% (from 197,532 to 96,941)
-
CFA active breeders dropped by 48% (from 19,462 to 10,187)
Good News For Persian and Exotic Breeders: While overall registrations are down, Persians continue to be the most popular breed in CFA and Exotics are #4 . More than 3/5ths of all recorded live births in CFA were Persian or Exotic cats.
-
62% of all litters registered in CFA were Persians or Exotics
-
58% of all litters registered in 2001 were Persians
- Colorpoint Exotics litter registrations were up 112% in 2001 compared to 1991
|
Bad News for Persian and Exotic Breeders: While Persians and Exotics are are very popular breeds of cats, their numbers are still drastically down from what they were 10 years ago.
-
Himalayan registrations are down 52%
-
Persian registrations are down 73%
- Exotics are down 19%
